I know I have said it a million times but strategy and planning can really help you when you want to travel and find awesome deals.
I have an upcoming trip soon inshaAllah (God willing) and needed a hotel in the Dublin area for a night. For some reason the Dublin airport hotels can be a little expensive. I was planning on waiting to see what offers will pop up last minute before I book something that I can’t cancel. I always prefer to book cancellable nights especially if my trip is months ahead and this always proves to be a good strategy.
I will write about it more in the future as I know that some people always struggle with waiting to book and want to have everything planned months ahead of the trip. I am a spontaneous person and a risk taker so I prefer to wait, especially when experience tells me that last minute hotels have some great deals. For this trip I have been monitoring hotels and the prices have changed so much that it is crazy. On average they became £120 cheaper than they were 3 months ago.
I think so far this can be considered one of my cheapest redemptions ever. I have written about the IHG points break many times here and I wrote about the last one here. In my book I also mention the IHG group and some of their great perks, so no brainer that I do pay close attention to their points breaks and offers.
Surprisingly my intuition was right and in the previous Points Break there was a Crowne Plaza hotel near Dublin airport for 5,000 points. When I booked it I thought there was no shuttle so I had to budget an extra £20 to get to and from the airport. However it turns out there is a regular complimentary shuttle bus so it is another saving. The hotel is currently fully booked for my night however last week when I checked the price for the night was £140. I only paid 5,000 points which Raffles from Head for Points values at £5 per 1,000. I do agree with this evaluation so I will say that my hotel stay is worth between £23-£25.
Considering that it is pretty easy to receive 5,000 as a bonus from one of their promotions this is a pretty good deal. The hotel I was looking to book was a two star hotel for £50. Because I waited I managed to get a four star hotel for less than the price of a two star. I think this is one of the cheapest hotel redemptions I have done so far. I am sure there will be plenty more in the future but I do love a good deal.
Of course on the other side you always need a plan B just in case something goes wrong and you don’t have the best offer, then you need to be covered. I always recommend for you to book a cancellable hotel that you are happy with and if this hotel becomes cheaper or something else comes along that sounds like a better deal, then you can always cancel with no penalties. In this case I would have used some Travel pony credits I have and stayed in a hotel near the airport, as it is literally only to sleep so I am not bothered too much about amenities and luxury.
Do you have any good hotel redemptions that where an excellent value? I would love to hear as I am always on the look out. 🙂
