So this is a question I receive quite often so I thought I will do a quick post with regards to it. This blog has a lot of information on Umrah, how to find cheap flights, hotels and of course Umrah practicalities.
When Can you do Umrah
So the Umrah period is the period where pilgrims are allowed to go and perform Umrah. This also means that this is the time that the Saudi embassy issues visas. Please note that you cannot issue a visa for Umrah yourself and you will need a registered agent to do this for you.
There is no set date when Umrah opens, however it is approximately 2 months after Hajj. This gives time for the Saudi authorities to clean up after Hajj and to prepare for Umrah. This is not an easy process and the more I look into Hajj &Umrah the more I respect the amount of effort it takes to host millions of people.
So the Umrah period starts approximately 2 months after Hajj and ends the first week or so of Ramadan. This is when the Saudi authorities stop issuing visas for Umrah and start preparing for Hajj visas. So if for example, you want to go for Umrah in Ramadan you will have to apply before Ramadan in order to receive it on time.
Umrah Visa After Ramadan
Umrah visas are not issued after Ramadan. Pilgrims who go to visit during Ramadan must leave the country when Ramadan ends and cannot overstay this time. Basically, you have to leave on Eid or shortly after Eid.
Visas are not issued to people for Umrah after Ramadan so there is no way for you to go then. The only people who can perform Umrah after Ramadan are GCC nationals; those with permanent residency or work permits and Saudis. This is as I mentioned above in order to control the flow and make sure they are ready for Hajj. If you want to go for Umrah after Ramadan you will actually have to wait after Hajj…
In short Visas for Umrah are open approximately 9 months out of the 12th, this is minus the preparing period and Hajj time.

hello MTG’s Team,
you’ve been wonderful in providing assistance to Hajj/Umrah aspirants, however I have a question: I would like to go to K.S.A for Umrah during the holy month of Ramadan. I happened to renew my passport recently and I will get my passport on 18th Ramadan. Will I be still eligible to apply for Umrah Visa ? I read somewhere that Umrah visa will be issued upto 15th Ramadan, is that true ? Can I still count on it ?
Regards,
Riaz.
Muslim Travel Girl says
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to make it as visa are only issued until the 15th after this the Umrah is closed until later in the year ( about 2 months after Hajj).
Always make sure you arrange these things in advance as even the embassy will need 2 weeks for the visa.
